If you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ve probably seen the two ends of the trendy home spectrum: maximalist-color-drenching and minimalist-light-and-bright. We tend to think there’s a group out there that isn’t yet represented: the moderate color lovers. You want color and visual interest, but you’re not ready for bold patterned wallcovering. You might want an exciting art piece or statement sofa, but not both. We hear you! Adding color to your space can be as simple as these three tips.
1. Neutralize Fixed Finishes
Our first tip is to keep your architectural details and fixed finishes neutral. Things like cabinets, flooring, tile, and millwork details are big-ticket items and the most difficult to change. Find materials that are timeless and that you know you won’t want to change in a short amount of time. This doesn’t mean it has to be boring — using contrasting light and dark tones or textured finishes can still add a lot of visual interest without overwhelming when you add color. On this project, we kept it neutral with white walls, black steel beams, and light oak floors.
2. Anchor your color palette
Find a focal piece for the space that inspires your color palette. This could be a piece of art, a countertop, a rug, or anything that draws the colors together and directs your soft good and accessory choices. Make sure this piece is something you really love—it’s like creating an outfit based on your favorite pair of shoes. Pick one thing that is to die for, and the rest of the decision-making will come easily. In this project, we used the ‘Serenity Blue’ quartz countertop as our anchor and the inspiration for the color palette.
3. ADD THAT COLOR!
Finally, it’s time to add that color! Pull the color palette in through easy-to-change items like pillows, art, sculptures, rugs, accessories, and furniture. These are lower-cost items that are easy to swap in and out as your taste changes. Let’s be honest, designing a home is never truly done! Don’t be afraid to go bold—your neutral fixed finishes and anchoring color palette piece will make the whole space come together. We used local artwork, upholstery, rugs, furniture, and accessories to make this home come alive with color!
